Keynote: The Demarcation of the Edge of Innovation

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations."

— Mark Twain

People often describe innovation as “new ideas” but if there is no such thing as a new idea, then what is innovation, and where is the edge between innovative and methodical?

Innovation is a recipe. Instructions and ingredients combine to produce new and interesting outcomes. It is ingrained into the human experience making all of us innovators in one way or another. But can innovation exist without dependency? What if we had to craft all of our own ingredients?

Together, we will explore how to use Nerves to build recipes for producing innovative platforms. We will analyze a selection of open source, production products by deconstructing their recipes, ultimately applying the principals of connectivity and dependency to the challenges we face in advancing the edge of innovation for hardware and software development.
